FAA SAIB 2025-04 on Unleaded Fuel

WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the public-private Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) initiative are calling on pilots, aircraft owners, mechanics, and fixed-base operators (FBOs) to help shape the future of general aviation by documenting and reporting their experiences with the use of a new, high-octane unleaded aviation fuel available at various airports across our Nation.

Complete news release here.
GOPA Dues increase for 2025-26

GOPA Dues Increase For 2025-26

After much discussion and consideration, the GOPA Board recently voted to increase our annual dues to $75. The increase will become effective July 1, 2025. The Board studied a 5-year projection of revenue and expenses and concluded that an increase in dues will allow us to continue to provide you with the best possible return for your membership dollar.

We are all aware that the cost of almost everything has increased significantly in the past few years. Your Association is not immune to those increases.

We have not had a dues increase since 2016. An adjustment was needed in 2021 but because of the effect COVID was having in the country, it was postponed. Prior to 2016, the previous increase was in 2008. There was no dues increase from 1994 to 2004, a period of 10 years

Although a relatively small amount in the scheme of aviation dollars, the Board is sensitive to increases which is why they do not often occur in your Association.

We thank all our members for your continued support of the Grumman Owners and Pilots Association.

Unleaded Fuel Issues, Updated links attached

The following was sent to our Executive Director, I have no further information at this time.

Unleaded aviation fuel is being tested in several locations throughout the United States. One of those locations is Watsonville, CA. Member Sam Kennedy who is based at WVI reported that local mechanics have observed damage to sealants, gaskets, O-rings and hoses to aircraft using this fuel.(See photo)

We recommend using caution before putting this fuel in your aircraft until more data are available. Several other organizations, including EAA and the Cirrus owners group have_ issued similar warnings.

GOPA Member Recruitment

Grumman Owners and Pilots Membership Drive and Challenge

Dear GOPA Members,
I don’t know any GOPA member who doesn’t like a challenge. So, from now and until our next conference September 15-18, 2025 in Groton/Mystic Connecticut, I challenge you to bring in at least one new member or a member from the past, back to the Grumman family.
When you do, you will be entered to win some GOPA BUCKS to use towards paying your GOPA annual membership, but first remember, you must be a current member in good standing at the time of the drawing.
1. For every new or long time (2 years or more) past member you recruit, you will have the opportunity to receive $25.00 in GOPA BUCKS in a drawing held at the 2025 convention in Connecticut.
2. GOPA BUCKS will be used as a credit to help pay your annual membership.
3. One ticket for every new member you recruit will be issued in your name and entered. One winner out of all entrants will be drawn.
4. The new member you recruited will receive their next year’s membership free.
5. GOPA BUCKS is based on how many new members you personally recruit.
6. Example: One new member $25.00 credit in GOPA BUCKS, two new members and your personal pot grows to $50.00 and so on.
7. There is a new block in the member application form where the new member must record your name as the member that influenced/recruited them to join.
8. Print the recruitment card to use as talking points to the perspective member to join. Enter your name on the card below and give the card to the new perspective member. Make sure you explain that the new member must enter your name in the online application for both to qualify for the drawing.
9. You or the new member do not need to attend the convention to win.
10. Remember, one current member will receive the value of their own pot in GOPA BUCKS if their ticket is selected at next year’s convention. The new member they recruited will receive their next year’s membership free.
11. Most of all have some fun with the program.
SCAM ALERT

Dear Members,

Recently, within the last week or so some scam emails have made their way to some of our members. Today, thankfully I received several inquiries about them from some of our members before acting on them. As we get closer to the holidays, scammers are getting smarter and more ingenious in their attempts to relieve you of your money or just to annoy us.

Someone is (spoofing) impersonating me using the title of the Presidents email listed on our website. They mask their real email having it read as if it came from me, the GOPA President. It is not a hack into our system just some evil people somewhere trying to scam you by preying on your generosity and trusting nature. Please do not fall for it.

Understand that no one, from the GOPA Board will ever contact you, asking for things like, can you purchase some cash cards because I'm supposedly in a meeting, to busy, or doing something else, and take a picture and send me the numbers, or that I created some kind of incentive program and I need their help and some cash to complete. All with the catch phrase that you will be reimbursed. There has actually been more than a few scam or spam emails that just says give me a call, can we talk.

You will see a similar warning paragraph soon in the next Star, but this is too important not to address immediately. Most of you have my personal email which has my full name to identify, and or phone number to contact me. Do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly if something does not look right. Thanks to those that did exactly that today and made me aware this was happening... and now I'm making you aware.

Blue Skies,

President - GOPA

Title Changes

At a recent Board meeting a number of name/title changes were instituted to try and help with the differences in duties. Previously the Regional Director was also a Board member, under the new governance policy the Board position has been separated from the RD position and the RD is now a Regional Coordinator. A Regional Coordinator can also be elected as a Director at Large to sit on the Board.

The Program Directors are now Program Managers.

These changes are a result of the GOPA applying for tax exempt status and all that ensues to fit the mold required by the US federal laws. There have been a couple of Star articles outlining this process and no doubt there will be future articles also.

Garmin GFC500 autopilot ALERT

Garmin GFC500 autopilot ALERT (May not apply to our planes)

Garmin has found a problem with the optional GAD28 auto-trim for the GFC500 autopilot which could cause runaway nose-up trim. This does NOT affect the basic GFC500 without the optional autotrim. If you have auto-trim, you must immediately disable the autopilot by pulling and collaring the c/b and placarding the autopilot inop. You can then take it to your Garmin shop to have the auto-trim disabled after which you can resume using the autopilot, manually trimming as needed when you get a TRIM light. For more information, see the documents below or contact your Garmin dealer.

100LL Replacement Approved

GeneralAviationModifications, Inc.
2800 Airport Rd. Hangar A
Ada, OK 74820
580 436-4833
Fax 580 436-6622
Press Release: September 1, 2022
For Immediate Release
General Aviation Modifications, Inc. (GAMI) is pleased to announce that we have received the FAA’s Approval of the expansion of our Supplemental Type Certificates on the use of our G100UL High Octane, Unleaded Avgas. The Approved Model List (AML) now covers every spark ignition piston engine and every airframe using a spark ignition piston engine(s) in the FAA’s Type Certificate database.
GAMI has conducted testing and certification of the G100UL under the FAA’s Supplemental Type Certificate Certification Program with a high level of FAA oversight for the past 12+ years. George Braly, GAMI’s co-founder and Head of Engineering said “We’ve been told by the FAA that this is the most thoroughly tested and documented STC that has ever been done at the Wichita Aircraft Certification Office.”
GAMI’s G100UL has many advantages over today’s 100LL.
1. In addition to having “no lead (TEL)” the fuel has equivalent octane performance and can work in even the most demanding high compression ratio and turbocharged engines.
2. The G100UL has no “organometallic additives” or “scavenging agents” and as such burns exceedingly clean similar to today’s unleaded auto fuels. This results in exceptionally clean combustion chambers, free of deposits and materially improving such maintenance headaches like frequent oil and spark plug changes required with today’s leaded fuel.
3. It is fully “miscible” or “fungible” with 100LL in any proportion without loss of properties and approved as such in the wing of an airplane.
4. Being petroleum based, the G100UL can be produced at a large number of refineries or specialty chemical production facilities improving the logistics of delivering this aviation gasoline through the existing infrastructure
5. The G100UL has been tested for its material compatibility and found to be acceptable for use with a wide range of materials. No changes are required of the aircraft or engine other than the application of placards.
6. Operationally, the G100UL is virtually identical to 100LL and actually has a bit more energy (BTUs/gal.) for increased range of the aircraft.
Tim Roehl, President and Co-founder of GAMI said “It’s a great day for GA! Not only can we look forward to a lead free fuel future, the benefits of the G100UL will improve the maintainability and reliability of our engines, enhancing dispatchability and safety!

Impromptu European meeting for 2022

Hi Folks,

This is your European RD with an important message:

As sad as the cancellation of our annual European meeting was we stubborn European breed didn’t want to abstain a third time from meeting friends and agreed on an impromptu meeting instead.

There will be no prior arrangements. No (official) gala dinner. No official bus tour. Nobody has to be afraid of getting the ‚most prestigious safety-award‘ - I think.

Just meeting with friends in a really nice place. I might be talked into giving a guided walk in the beautiful landscape.

When: 1-4.6.2022 (European notation)

Where: EGJB, Guernsey, Channel islands (Hint: very, very cheap fuel - at least to European standards)

As of today there are still plenty of hotels around available albeit it being a long holiday weekend so you better book quick.

Bring your cameras. Did I mention it’s beautiful from the air and on the ground?

If you need more info/help/assistance in planning (Over-water-trip!) just mail or call me.

See you there

GOPA Europe 2022 Cancelled

Dear Friends,

it is with real sadness that we’ll have to cancel this years convention - again.

Please see Rafal’s mail below for details. This war surely is a real reason for cancelling.

It is up to you if you’ll ask for the proposed refund or if you’d like to donate. Totally up to you, no peer pressure. Please let Rafal know your decision through the convention email: gopa2022krakow@gmail.com

First two years of Covid - now this war.

After trying real hard for three years now and not having received a single application during those three years for a convention proposal I am at a loss if and where we can host another European convention.

My email about a month ago did not trigger a single response from the membership. Not a single one.

If you feel like you could host next years event, please get in contact with me.

Thank you and safe flying to all,

Yogi

European RD of GOPA

Hi Yogi,

I regret to inform you that we will have to cancel the GOPA 2022 event in Krakow due to the situation in Poland, which due to the war in Ukraine is already difficult and is getting worse.

2.7 million refugees have arrived here, and this number is growing every day, there is a shortage of various goods in shops and we all have additional responsibilities here. In addition, we observe an unprecedented increase in the prices of virtually all goods and services - from food to gasoline, and it certainly exceeds 15-20%. Moreover, we are observing major turbulence - many employees return to Ukraine, there are many bankruptcies and company failures.

The money I received for the meeting via Wise, PayPal and bank transfer will be returned to senders with the proviso that some of them did not send 230 Euro but the equivalent in PLN converted at the time of sending. Currently, this exchange rate is significantly different to their disadvantage.

Participants who have booked a hotel in Krakow are asked to contact the hotel directly in order to cancel the reservation.

I think that Poland is not the best place for such meetings now, due to these circumstances, their existence was a force majeure.

Best Regards, Rafał

GOPA Makes a Difference

GRUMMAN OWNERS & PILOTS ASSOCIATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE!!!

FAA Proposed AD re: delamination issues

Great News: Due to all the supportive submissions, which helped to document why the proposed AD was costly, largely unnecessary and would not contribute to the overall safety of the fleet, the FAA has just announced that they are not pursuing the AD that would require annual tap testing of the seams on all models of the Grumman Light Aircraft to determine if debonding issues were present.

During the comment period of the AD, GOPA took the lead in asking our Technical Director, John Cotter, to work up a submission detailing why this AD was unnecessary due to the fact that detailed descriptions of performing a tap test for delamination already existed in our Grumman maintenance manuals.

Many, many thanks to John Cotter for his incredible detailed and accurate submission on behalf of the Grumman Owners & Pilots Association, thanks also to AOPA, Fortnight Aviation Maintenance, Fletchair and to all individual GOPA members and non-members who submitted documentation to the FAA as well.

This is what your Grumman Owners and Pilots Association advocated for, and we are happy to see the FAA agrees.

https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2022-07871.pdf

GOPA Europe Update

My very dear Grumman friends,

as you have surely seen in the news there is an ongoing military conflict here in Europe. Totally unfounded and totally unwanted but direct influence is out of our hands. Very many countries are united in the fight against the initiating aggressor and are working towards some form of peace.

The pressure within Russia is rising quite quickly. Thousands of protesters are being jailed daily - numbers rising quickly. Being overly optimistic I am wishing for an end ASAP. Like most everybody else.

However, it could turn into a year-long conflict costing even more lives.

I surely don’t want to get into any politics but let me have one personal comment: Please bear in mind it is not ‚the Russians‘ who started it. It is one stubborn powerful person forcing it with his command line.

There is much grief and pain within the families of the fallen on both sides.

Sting once sang: ’I hope the Russians love their children too.’ Yes, they do. All the ordinary people want this to stop.

This is a brief message to let you know that our event hasn’t been cancelled - yet. It might not help the Ukraine or Poland if we do not show up. I’ll get into more details later.

Up to today Poland alone took on 1.2 million refugees from Ukraine. Other countries some as well but Poland bears 80% of the burden. It does cause them challenges - not only logistical ones.

Rafal our polish friend and myself are in constant contact with the airfield, hotel etc. I have relations and contacts to Ukranian people and some background info constantly being updated.

So for the time being I’ll kindly ask you to be patient and stand by. Do not flood me nor Rafal with messages and requests.

We are evaluating the situation regularly and a final decision will be taken later when we see more clearly.

We do appreciate your patience. Thank you very much.

There are rumours or initiatives of participants letting the hotel have the rooms without a refund and not showing up.

Please hold your breath for a while. This is a kind offer but is not the most effective solution to help the refugees.

We fully understand if you want to cancel from your side or if you’d like to donate your hotel or event fee.

Rest assured I will later beg you for money and donations anyhow. Whether you show up or not.

Meanwhile please consider donating plentiful. We as pilots are quite well off while others left their loved ones behind and only have their clothes, maybe one or two children and grandma in tow and are in dire need for help and shelter.

If the event will take place I have some preliminary plans how we could help the region and people while we’re there.

Giving charity flights to children to distract them briefly and put a smile on their face being one of them. There’s quite a bit of logistic, etc involved but we’re not there yet.

Once again - bear with us. We’ll keep you informed.

Thank you for your understanding,

Yogi, RD Europe

Proposed Bondline Inspection AD

The NPRM is here. There is a Comment tab in the document.

Basically the NPRM calls for bondline inspections as specified in the Maintenance Manual 100 hr/annual inspections. A small percentage of the fleet is being inspected by persons not familiar with the proper inspection techniques and since the AA5 incident last summer the FAA is on the lookout.

Update:

On December 13, the GOPA Board met to discuss the FAA's proposed new AD which affects the AA-5A and AA-5B models.

After much discussion and agreement on what should be done, the board tasked our Technical Director, John Cotter, with communicating GOPA's position on the NPRM to the FAA as your "Type Club" input.

We will communicate additional information to you as it becomes available.

True Flight SB195A Released

True Flight published SB195A, you can obtain a copy here- https://trueflightaerospace.com/sb-195/ or the three files combined into one pdf here.

The executive summary is that the revised SB-195 "A" removes the requirement to rivet all bondlines of the vertical stabilizer if delamination is found on the horizontal stabilizer. It still requires the riveting of the outboard rib and trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizers, but NOT the riveting of all stabilizer bondlines. So overall, this version of SB-195 A reduces the requirements to a much more realistic and focused repair, when necessary.

Delamination, True Flight has issued SB 195.

TRUE FLIGHT IS WORKING ON A REVISION TO THIS SB.

True Flight has issued SB 195 to require inspection of our aircraft for delamination. You can find Service Bulletin 195 here:

https://trueflightaerospace.com/sb-195/

SB 195 will most likely become mandatory by the issuance of an Airworthiness Directive in the not distant future.

Inspection of all AA1, AA-1A, AA-1B, AA-1C and AA5 aircraft is required within the next 25 hours, time in service. All AA-5A, and AA-5B aircraft must be inspected within 100 hours, time in service.

Grumman Horizontal Stabilizer Failure, Update

There's been a lot of concern recently about the recent FAA NOTC regarding the failure of the horizontal stab on a Traveler and the likely AD resulting. Much of this concern has revolved around the apparent lack of involvement of Grumman experts in the process. In fact, True Flight has been directly ad deeply involved all along and was already preparing a Service Bulletin on the problem when that notice was released by the FAA.

True Flight has been consulting Grumman experts including David Fletcher, Gary Vogt, and John Sjaardema. GOPA Tech Director John Cotter is now involved, too.

As background, this all started with this accident:

https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-repgen/api/Aviation/ReportMain/GenerateNewestReport/102531/pdf

GOPA Tech Director John Cotter contacted the investigating FSDO within days of the accident, requesting any and all additional information. He then wrote the Elevator Failure article which was published in the March-April Star Magazine:

https://tinyurl.com/y4zs4vxz
A GOPA member AA5 owner who read that article performed a visual inspection of his aircraft and saw corrosion at the hinge attach point. He contacted the GOPA Tech Director, True Flight and the FAA. Representatives of the FAA and of True Flight went to his location to inspect his aircraft. This confirmed that the delamination issue in the accident aircraft wasn't a "one-off." That owner is replacing his horizontal stabilizer.

One issue which has led to some confusion is that the FSDO Inspector who sent out the NOTC is only the person investigating the accident, not the person developing the AD; that is being done by the Aircraft Certification Office (ACO) in conjunction with True Flight. However, FAA rules on AD development prohibit sharing most information with the public until the AD is completed. This has resulted in some confusion about who's doing what, but we hope this message will alleviate some concerns.

The problem which led to the Traveler accident appears to be the delamination of the skin of the horizontal stab from the outboard rib to which the outboard elevator hinge plate is attached, resulting in failure of the rib and loss of elevator control. This design is common to all AA-1x's and the AA-5, but completely different in the AA-5A/B, where the bracket is attached to the aft spar, not the outboard rib. You can see this part in the relevant Maintenance and Parts Manuals. The delamination was a result of a number of factors resulting in corrosion inside the bonded joint. Note this was a '72 Traveler, so the "purple passion" glue used in 1975 was not involved. This progressive delamination could have been detected by routine "tap test" of the bonded seam as called for in the 100-hour/annual checklist for all our aircraft, but which may be getting skimped on by some people.

So, the first lesson learned is to be diligent about doing that tap test at every inspection.

Also, it appears that a contributing factor was the freezing and melting of water which had intruded into the rib/skin joint while temperatures were going up and down above/below freezing. So while we know not everyone can keep their plane hangared, to the max extent possible, do try to keep your plane dry and out of the elements.

At this time, the FAA and True Flight are working on final wording of an SB to check for these issues. Much will be taken from the old SB125A on delamination repairs, but updated and expanded, with improved guidance on the conduct of tap tests. The AD will likely make the SB mandatory, probably with a "100 hours or next annual" completion time. As to what the SB will say, the following is preliminary, but should be close to the final.

The SB will have two parts - one that is more general and include the Cheetah and Tiger, and likely be a "next 100 hours or next annual, whichever comes first."

The second part will be more focused on one-time inspection of the tail of all AA1s and Travelers. It will also be more urgent (likely within 20 hrs) to allow owners to get the plane to a suitable shop for the inspection.

It's not certain whether any required inspection will require removal of the stab tip for more direct examination, or whether tap testing/visual inspection will be sufficient. If your plane is clean with little to no corrosion the only ongoing inspection will be the one prescribed in the first part of the service bulletin - i.e. annual tap test which is, of course, already part of the annual inspection. If corrosion or delamination is found, mitigating steps will be prescribed. The mitigating steps are not yet decided. They could include some upgrade to the rib/skin attachment, but whether that will be necessary and what that might involve is still under discussion. True Flight is working directly with the ACO on these issues.

The one thing which IS certain is something we all should already know - that the tap test of the bondlines at each 100-hour/annual inspection as listed in the Maintenance Manuals for all our planes (not just the

AA-1x/AA-5) is critical. There is little doubt in the minds of the experts that had the accident airplane been tap-tested, the delamination would have been detected well before it failed. Every one of you flying an AA-1x or AA-5 should be tap-testing that seam before your next flight and obtaining appropriate assistance from a mechanic who knows Grummans if you don't like what you hear. For you Cheetah/Tiger folks, the design of your horizontal stab/elevator attachment is totally different (the bracket is attached directly to the spar by four screws, not by two screws to the rib), so a failure mode would be different, but that's no reason not to tap-test your tail along the skin/aft spar bondline before your next flight.

Elevator Failure, 1972 Grumman Traveler

Elevator Failure, 1972 Grumman Traveler

As many of you are aware, a 1972 AA5’s elevator attachment system failed in flight. While there is significant damage to the aircraft, neither occupant is known to have suffered any injury. I would consider elevator detachment a “fail fatal” failure mode, so the two individuals are very lucky.

Please see complete article here:

I look forward to seeing the T-shirts worn proudly at the GOPA convention in September and I’m sure they will be worn at many other flying events throughout the year!

Thank you for supporting youth in aviation.

Due to the ever changing concerns and restrictions on our world regarding the Covid-19 Virus the AYA Board of Directors have moved the 2020 Fredericksburg Convention to May 10-13, 2021.

NO AYA CONVENTION IN 2020.

Many, many thanks to Scott Sanders, Susan Dollar, Cindy and Bill Daley for agreeing to host the 2021 Convention in Fredericksburg, Texas. There are still many hours that are needed to cancel and re-book the venues, etc and that TAKES A LOT TIME AND COMMITMENT!! Thanks again to you all.

The 2021 Pacific Region convention will now be held in 2022 (no date set yet). I also want to thank Kim Muinch for his understanding and willingness to move the Pacific Region Convention to 2022. Kim has been putting in a lot of time researching sites and hotels for 2021 and now must reschedule as well.

Full refunds have already been issued to all who had registered and paid their registration fees for the 2020 Convention.

Don’t forget to cancel any reservations you may have made ie: car/hotel/airlines. Hopefully they are all of the understanding of the situation and full refunds will be forth coming. We just cancelled our hotel room at the Hangar Hotel and received a full refund.

Scott Sanders has been in contact with the Hangar Hotel and they have agreed to book the AYA in for 2021 at the same quoted price of this year (this includes room rates and conference center). WOW!!!
AYA Bahamas Relief Flight - Walt Porter

There we were, five Grummans in a loose formation heading for an airport, cleared for the right break for landing but there was a wall of water falling from the sky just to the right of the runway. Our inexperienced formation had to make a quick change to right echelon in order to break left away from the heavy rain...

It all started with a post on a social media site. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association members in Miami, Florida, had a load of relief supplies for the controllers in the Bahamas and were looking for pilots to deliver the supplies. AYA member Ross Brilakis saw the posting and contacted AYA Convention Co-Chair Matt Drahzal to see if the AYA could help during the convention. Matt sent an e-mail to the attendees asking for volunteers and five pilots answered the call. Former AYA safety director Ron Levy volunteered to be mission planner.

As it turned out, there was not enough time to do all the paperwork required to do the flight during the convention, so a decision was made to go on the day after the convention ended. Ron contacted the NATCA Chair - man for Disaster Response, Tom Flanary, to get the details. He then prepared a PowerPoint briefing for those of us who signed up.

Who knew a 45 minute flight to the Bahamas would require over four hours of paperwork preparation and submittal? First, there was the request to enter the Freeport Temporary Flight Restricted area. The request, the Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority Temporary Flight Authorization Application Hurricane Dorian Relief form required six attachments; 1) Aircraft Certificate of Registration; 2) Certificate of Airworthiness; 3) Aircraft Insurance; 4) Pilot License; 5) Pilot Medical; 6) Pilot Passport. Fortunately, they accepted photographs of the documents, but it took quite a while.
